Low-Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology transforms the way you operate – allowing you connect with your assets in remote locations and over long distances.

LPWAN is the ideal solution for cost-effectively transmitting small amounts of data in previously unfeasible environments – indoor, outdoor or underground.

Whether you are looking for a smart metering, asset monitoring or energy management solution, M2M Connectivity’s experts can help you source and deploy the right Sigfox, LoRaWAN or Cellular LTE Cat M1/NB-IoT LPWAN solution.

Why LPWAN?

LPWAN is designed for devices which require wide-range transmission and a long battery life with minimal power consumption. Most frequently, it is used to transmit small packets of data at infrequent intervals. It is useful in locations where other networks and types of connectivity may be too expensive or unavailable. LPWAN overcomes both connectivity challenges and cost using existing public radio spectrums to transmit M2M/IoT data.

Key advantages

  • Wide range – operates from 2km in urban areas to over 15 km in rural settings
  • Low power – batteries can last for 10-15 years reducing maintenance costs
  • Lower device cost – lightweight protocols reduce hardware complexity and device cost
  • Lower network cost – license-free or already owned licensed bands reduce costs
  • Efficient data transmission – packet sizes from 10 to 1,000 bytes at speeds up to 200 Kbps

Key applications

LPWANs are used for M2M and IoT applications across many industries – from energy to agriculture and industrial deployments.

Examples include:

  • Utilities – smart metering: electricity, gas and water use
  • Agriculture – environmental monitoring: crop, soil and water levels
  • Cities – smart cities: monitoring parking metres, street lights and waste management
  • Infrastructure – smart buildings: monitoring HVAC, alarms and access control
  • Mining – telematics: vehicle and asset tracking at remote sites.
  • Utilities – asset and infrastructure condition monitoring: downed power lines or short circuits.

The M2M Advantage

M2M has spent over 17 years delivering cellular technologies for M2M/IoT, from early days with analogue, CDMA and 2G/GSM and 3G networks, to now specialising in LTE networks across Australia and New Zealand.
  • Market leaders – offering IoT hardware services backed by Sierra Wireless
  • End-to-End solution management – providing clarity and control of devices, SIMs and services
  • Established partnerships – with Australia leading network providers
  • In-house engineering – Capable of solution design, device and network management to full integration
  • Global hardware portfolio – Access to one of the world’s most comprehensive IoT hardware portfolios

Helping you deploy the right LPWAN solution

With the support of our in-house IoT engineers, we can help you design and deploy the right LPWAN solution. LPWAN is not a single technology, but a group of technologies. They use licensed or unlicensed frequencies and include proprietary or open standard options.

Sigfox

The SIGFOX network in Australia and NZ is managed by Thinxtra. It’s affordable, power-efficient, and the most mature of all LPWAN technologies on the market.

LoRaWAN

This technology enables secure,
bi-directional communication between wireless devices. The network can be public (e.g. Spark’s NZ IoT Network) or owned by the customer (private LoRaWAN).
