Melbourne, Australia – December 10:  M2M Connectivity announces a new application to add satellite connectivity to the Sierra Wireless AirLink GX400 gateway.

Melbourne, Australia – December 10:  M2M Connectivity announces a new application to add satellite connectivity to the Sierra Wireless AirLink GX400 gateway. The terrestrial connectivity offered by the GX400 can now be extended to include satellite communications on Inmarsat’s global satellite constellation.  The application using the GX400 in conjunction with an Inmarsat IsatData Pro IDP modem to provide 2-way text and data satellite communications with your assets when out of 3G coverage.

The AirLink GX400 is a compact, rugged 3G Ethernet Gateway offering multiple interfaces and integrated GPS, and with options such as Wi-Fi or additional IOs.  Providing high performance connectivity over 3G/NextG networks, the GX400 is ideal for use in mobile environments (AVL/tracking, field service, public safety) or fixed/portable settings (industrial, utilities, security, enterprise, point-of-sale).

The Inmarsat IsatData Pro satellite network offers an ability to send small amounts of data (up to 6 -10kb) with low latency for M2M applications. M2M Connectivity has developed an application to enable fail-over to Inmarsat IDP satellite in situations where the GX400 leaves terrestrial 3G coverage.  Using an IDP modem such as the IDP 680 we can provide bi-directional messaging services between the terminal and the GX400 Gateway over satellite. While this does not mirror the full 3G data service over the GX400 3G router it allows critical information to continue to be sent, including GPS locations, alerts and alarms, and simple messaging such as job despatch and report services.

“We are excited to offer satellite extension to the GX400 gateway,” says Darren Moroney, General Manager of M2M Connectivity, “The GX400 with satellite extension allows our customers to provide communications and OH&S support to staff even when they leave cellular coverage, whilst using the great features of the GX400 3G router when in cellular”.
